Phoning It In Sneak Peek
Phoning It In is an old book, one I wrote many years ago when I was working at my first out-of-college job in a call center. (Let's just say that when I unearthed the manuscript it required a major technological overhaul as in the original version Melinda has such high-tech gadgets as a text pager, and e-mail was still a new thing.) Melinda isn't me, and her story differs from mine in many significant ways, but she's also probably the protagonist that's closest to my heart as I've been in her shoes and had many similar experiences as her. From dealing with the soul-sucking atmosphere of work in a call center to her struggles with weight and self-image, much of what Melinda experiences resonates with me.
The central question in the book is whether Melinda can break free of these restrictions, most of which she's really placed on herself. I don't see courage as something that people possess per se, but more something people find when they muster up the strength to go for something that terrifies them. Several aspects of Melinda's life require a great deal of courage for her to overcome, and though she's not a sword-and-shield kind of hero like some of my other female protagonists, Melinda is a fighter in her own right.
