How to torment an author: leave a tale unfinished

Cancelled TV shows: the bane of my existence. I can't stand having stories left unfinished. I mean, I understand the business reasons behind why this is done, but that doesn't mean I like it. Imagine you went to see a movie and it cut off forty-five minutes into the show. Sorry, folks. You don't get to know if Sandra Bullock will manage to get herself back down to Earth or if she'll be doomed to float around the wreckage of the International Space Station from now until eternity. Imagine if the Harry Potter novels had been cut off after the fourth book. Wouldn't it kill you not to know what would happen to Harry, Ron, and Hermione? I'd probably have needed pills and therapy to help me get over the lack of closure.

Alphas. Such a great show, and it just...ends. Every time I think about it, I get upset. If you haven't seen it, I'd like to tell you to watch it because it's awesome, but I wouldn't want to inflict the heartbreak on you. Since Netflix is fond of picking up shows and finishing them off to spare viewers the angst of not knowing what happens--Arrested Development, The Killing--I cherish this secret hope they'll revive Alphas. Please, please, pretty please?

I've just finished streaming Veronica Mars via Amazon Prime, and I can see why fans of the show raced to back the Kickstarter for the movie. I
admit I didn't get it before watching the show, but now I totally do. It's a superb show with an absolutely winning, fantastic, kick-ass female character who still has plenty of flaws and is prone to making ill-advised decisions. V pretty much had me in her corner from the get-go, and I developed a sincere affection for many of the other characters as well: Keith, Mac, Weevil, Piz, Wallace. I had a sort of love/hate relationship with Logan. Even Dick was developed shades and facets--shades and facets, I tell you! Then, suddenly, the show ceases to be. All those dangling plot threads! I'm planning to watch the movie tonight, and I feel a great deal of relief at the thought that I won't have to live without knowing what happens to V and the crew.

This television season was no exception either. The powers that be at Fox drove a stake straight through my heart by cancelling Almost Human. I loved that show, like, really loved it. I loved the premise, the world it was set in, and, most of all, the main characters. The bromance between Dorian and Kennex was superb, masterful, wonderful. The show raised so many questions, like just what was on the other side of the wall? And now I will never know! Fox tried really hard to kill another of my favorite shows, Fringe, but was fortunately unsuccessful in that attempt, though they did plenty of harm to the show. Why, Fox, why are you so fond of destroying your sci-fi shows? *much wailing and gnashing of teeth*

While it's not all bad news for me--next year I'll get more Helix, more Vikings, more Person of Interest, more The Legend of Korra--I'm extremely bummed about the early and untimely deaths of so many of the shows I like. Maybe my tastes are particular, I don't know. But if you're really wondering how to torture an author, TV seems to have hit on a tried-and-true formula: cancel a show just as it's building up steam, leaving fans dangling forever. Intrepid viewers, can we hit on another campaign like the peanuts one that resulted in more episodes of Jericho (even though I did end up being cancelled--again)? Or like the fan campaign that inspired Comedy Central to pick up Futurama (alas, also only for it to be cancelled again). Is Netflix our new savior? I'll be waiting, ever hopeful.
